News & Updates
Mississippi has a rich and complex history, with the struggles of Black Mississippians at the forefront of the fight for civil rights and political representation. From the days of slavery to the present, Black Mississippians have fought to have a say in their own future and the future of their state.
One of the most notable aspects of Mississippi’s Black political history is the long tradition of Black politicians fighting for their community’s rights. Some of the most well-known of these figures include Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Aaron Henry, all of whom were instrumental in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. Evers, a civil rights leader and NAACP field secretary, was assassinated in his driveway in 1963. Hamer, a former sharecropper, became a national figure after she gave a powerful speech at the 1964 Democratic National Convention in which she described the violence and voter suppression faced by Black Mississippians. Henry, a pharmacist and civil rights leader, was the first Black person to serve in the Mississippi House of Representatives since Reconstruction.
These and other Black political leaders fought against some of the most entrenched and violent systems of racism and oppression in the country, including Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, and voter intimidation. They faced death threats, violence, and imprisonment for their efforts, but their activism paved the way for future generations of Black Mississippians to take up the mantle of political engagement and fight for progressive change.
Today, the Mississippi Alliance for Change PAC (MAC PAC) continues this legacy by working to build political power for Black and marginalized communities in the state. Our mission is to support candidates who will fight for the rights and needs of all Mississippians, particularly those who have been historically marginalized and excluded from political decision-making. We believe that by building a more just and equitable society, we can create a better future for all.
As we reflect on the history of Black political engagement in Mississippi, we are reminded of the resilience and determination of those who have come before us. We are proud to continue their legacy through our work with MAC PAC, and we will keep fighting for a more just and equitable Mississippi for all.
